Tanner crafts a family saga full of love, greed, betrayal, loyalty, and honor with "Wild Oats." The lives of Phillip Ashfield, Allison Waverly, and Tommy Calvert collide in this story with Allison in the middle. Can the Australian beauty find love as the world is poised for war?The story is set in Australia in 1914 just before the start of World War I. Allison Waverly is a young girl on the brink of womanhood. Her father is a drunk, and her brother, Jim, is a crass youth. Jim's friend, Tommy, loves Allison, but is afraid to show her how he feels. English aristocrat, Phillip Ashfield, falls for Allison and while he gives her gifts, he's weak-willed in his convictions.

Tanner's writing is engaging and easy to read. I love traveling to different places and experiencing new things, and I found Tanner's Australia setting against the backdrop of World War I compelling.
What I enjoyed the most about the novel was how Tanner painted the Waverly family saga with broad strokes. Allison is a true heroine. Just when you think there's no hope left, she makes her own.
The characters are interesting. The readers meet Allison as a young, naïve girl who grows into a seasoned woman, but not without having her convictions and beliefs challenged. Phillip gives into the conventions of the times, while Tommy finds the hero within him.
The book's title is fitting as the characters have wild oats to sow before they settle down. The novel is "sophisticated" for romance readers as there are scenes involving sex and love. Wild Oats is a page turner with characters that will resonate long after the reader finishes.

Seventeen-year-old Allison Waverley bubbles with joy for life. Her blue eyes sparkle with laughter. She loves riding horseback, wild and free, with her brother Jim and her best friend Tommy. She loves going places in the motorcar with Phillip Ashfield, the rich, powerful, visiting Englishman. Naïve, hardworking, and breathtakingly beautiful, she has no idea the feelings she stirs up in men. Reared by a drunkard father after the death of her mother, Allison is aware of the dos and don'ts of society, but ill-equipped to know how to implement them.
Her happy world is shattered with a horrific experience. She changes. She no longer bubbles with joy and the sparkle in her eyes dims. Laughter is replaced with worry, fears, and tears. She learns harsh truths about English aristocracy ways when Phillip disappears from her life. Also, she says goodbye to Jim and Tommy when they join the army, eager to see the world. Life becomes an exercise in survival for her after Tommy, with the help of Captain Frank Clarke, marries her and they have a short honeymoon before Tommy ships out along with Jim, leaving Allison alone since her father had disappeared.
Margaret Tanner's evocative writing style lures the reader in as she creates a mesmerizing tale of the life and times of Allison in Australia during World War I. She entwines the horrific battles in Turkey and France with Allison's struggles as she works to keep the homestead with no help. When all else seems so dark, Ms. Tanner manages to weave in a bright thread that brings joy to Allison's life. While Ms. Tanner shows the heartbreak and loss due to the war and the cruelty of one man, she also shows that glow of hope for Allison to find love and joy again--not that bubbly, sparkle joy of adolescent love once known, but a deep abiding love with a mature, wonderful, dependable special man.
As always, Margaret Tanner gives us a wonderful, memorable story.
P.S. Wild Oats, is a prequel to The Trouble With Playboys.
By the time the reader finishes the epilogue, Wild Oats turns out to be a full-fledged family saga. How nice to visit Australia and breathe the outback as we follow the life of Allison Waverly, whose beauty often lands her in trouble. Although she grows wiser with her choice in men, her heart remains faithful to doing what's right, especially when it comes to children. Despite her periods of hopelessness, there is yet another child to feed, shelter, and to love. Her life comes full circle with love and loss, and anger and forgiveness.
This book by Margaret Tanner provides a nice combination historical perspective set around World War I, romance, and the Australian outback!
